Young Indigenous leaders tackle the tough issues Wednesday, 6 December 2006
Three young Indigenous leaders from Shepparton and Mooroopna will launch their confronting community project tackling the tough issues around drugs and alcohol for local youth at the Ganbina Education Training and Employment Achievement Awards on Friday, December 1. Ganbina Koori Youth Leadership Program participants Aleasha Appo, Kurtis Atkinson and Kristine Mahy will screen their project, You've been Tagged, at Friday night's annual awards held at Eastbank. You've been Tagged is an initiative of the three leadership participants that takes a local focus on what impact drugs and alcohol have on youth aged between 15 and 25 years. Their research revealed alcohol, marijuana and party drugs were the most popular choice of drugs for youth in the Shepparton region. Guests at the launch will be the first to view the DVD and next year the participants will screen their project at local high schools and youth groups to reduce the risk of youth using drugs and alcohol. Ganbina was established in 1997, to represent the Indigenous community in the Goulburn Valley. It is recognised that Indigenous young people face significant barriers and additionally carry the burden of being leaders and role models. The Ganbina awards acknowledge the achievements and efforts of young Indigenous people and encourages them on their journey. 26 awards will be presented on Friday night.
