Alex Bux (left) and Liam Cross are Ganbina's most recent success story playing for the Murray Bushrangers
Warning...we have got a couple of Bushrangers at Ganbina! Year 9 Mooroopna Secondary College students Liam Cross and Alex Bux were selected to play in the elite Under/15 Murray Bushrangers Goulburn Murray Football team recently.
The Murray Bushrangers is a junior development initiative with the AFL and selects the best players from most of Victoria and Southern New South Wales to participate in its squads and competitions.
The Under/15 squad competed in a carnival in Melbourne between April 2-4. Liam and Alex were two of 25 players selected from 120 footballers who tried out for the squad. The boys said it was a good experience at the carnival. They won two out of three games and both Liam and Alex were among the goal kickers. Liam played in the centre and Alex played in the forward line. "The standard of football was very high and it was a great experience," Liam said. To add to Liam's excitement he got a surprise in the mail when he received an invitation to try out for the Victorian Country Under/15 football team. This is a pretty impressive achievement as only 50 of the 150 carnival players were asked to try out for the team.
Unfortunately, Alex will have to put his football aspirations on hold for a while until he recovers from a fractured shin. Hopefully he is back in form soon and can pull on his footy boots again.
The boys are Jobs 4U2 participants and are doing well at school and play Under/16 at Mooroopna Football Club. Jobs 4U2 project officer Geoff West said he was so proud of the boys. "It's so good to see young Indigenous kids playing at this level and taking opportunities to succeed."
